amistad character analysis

The movie starts off with Cinque, one of the slaves, breaking free from his shackles, and leading a revolt on the ship. You could tell it was hard for him because he was bleeding but he never gave up. He finally reaches his goal, pulling out a nail; his face has a brief flash of relief and then turns to determination as he uses the nail to undo his shackles, beginning a journey of unbelievable and saddening proportions. But in praising it, I touch on the film's great weakness: It is too much about the law and not enough about the victims.Ever since Spielberg began “Amistad,” the story has been hyped and hailed as a great untold chapter in American history, an event to put beside Nat Turner's uprising.

The important lesson to be learned is that while there was one small victory, there was still the overall war for freedom and safety for everyone that was still being fought. Some of the other performances are disappointing.

Another accurate detail from the movie is the treatment of slaves aboard La Amistad. He becomes the leader of the small group of slaves and as a spokesperson fighting for his and the other’s freedom. It was because of Cinque that they didn't lose hope.Out of all the characters, the most meaningful and most powerful character in the films would be Cinque. Instead, the court must decide whether the defendants were born of slaves (in which case they are guilty of murder) or were illegally brought from Africa (and therefore had a right to defend themselves against kidnapping).This legal distinction is not made as clear as it could have been; the international slave trade had been outlawed by treaties by 1839, the year of the landmark Amistad incident, but those who were already slaves remained the property of their masters--as did their children. And Cinque's memory of his wife left in Africa.What is most valuable about “Amistad” is the way it provides faces and names for its African characters, whom the movies so often make into faceless victims. Even without knowing english, his leadership skills never failed to be present and his determination ultimately allowed them to go back to Africa.Theodore Joadson and his interactions with Cinque struck me on a personal level. Amistad (1997) cast and crew credits, including actors, actresses, directors, writers and more. For these reasons Roger Sherman Baldwin is such an important character that persevered not just for himself but to save others. Yes, the characters in this movie are alive.

I'm just upset that his village was destroyed and his family was sold to slavery. He didn't accept a role as a slave. Although he was very modest, the rest of the Africans looked up to him, really because of his courage and bravery and determination that he has.

They include a horrifying scene where, with food running low on the ship, the weaker captives are chained together and thrown over the side to drown so that more food will be left for the rest.

These people were so real that it hurt to watch.

Even though he was at a disadvantage because he didn't understand English I think this made him stronger because he was able to express himself in his native language and the ferocity he delivered when speaking in mende made most people fear him. Practically everyone is against the slaves and the government tries to make it harder for the slaves to win the case.

I'm glad that he was willing to share his story, even though it was difficult to, in order to gain his and his people freedom. Graham Jackson

He was one of the few whites fighting for the Africans rights. During the long trip, Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) leads the slaves in an unprecedented uprising. Cinque’s personality was representative of a people of whom had not yet truly felt how it was to live a life of captivity, while Theodore’s personality conveyed just the opposite. The movie Amistad includes both aspects. He is bold, intellectual, and nostalgic of his family.

Although Cinque had little faith in Mr. Baldwin after the result of the first case, he was able to remain devoted to his fellow Africans as he knew they saw him as a leader. To me the most impactful character in the movie was Roger Sherman Baldwin. LSTD-1153-101 His determination demonstrates, at least towards that if you put your mind and soul into something, you can be great and achieve anything, and that is what Cinque was successful in. He wanted to see his family again and wanted the others to see theirs again too. According to Swanson (1998): Ultimately Cinque and his fellow escapees win the court case and gain their freedom.
