Sophie soon learns that a group of local women answer each and every letter, and she discovers a fifty year old letter that has lain unanswered, from a young girl, Claire, who has abandoned her first love, Lorenzo. Probably one of the last cute 2000's movies. What was that noise? Just been to Italy for a holiday and visited Verona so thought it would be fun to watch again. Normally I love rom-coms, but this is as bad as the genre gets. As they set out to identify Lorenzo from a multitude of namesakes, the animosity between Sophie and Charlie eventually grows to respect and their chemistry is undeniable. All the cast were well chosen, but especially Venessa Redgrave, who portrays a warm, loving 'motherly' character, searching for her teenage love, heartfelt and believable. While I thought Letters to Julliett could have been a half-hour shorter, it is worth watching just to hear Redgrave's character Claire read outloud the answer to her letter to Juliette. And then, well... the movie goes so far beyond its little romcom trappings when Vanessa Redgrave finally meets the love of her youth (played by Franco Nero). Especially for us hopeless romantics!! A very happy, romantic film. I absolutely would have loved to be on that adventure to find the lost love of 50 years ago. So much so I watched it twice!! There, under the heading 'A Courtyard in Verona', I was surprised to discover that, while the story is a complete fiction, the event(s) of letters being left to (Romeo's) Juliet and the location, are not. Letters to Julliett has big-budget cinematography, a great soundtrack and a well-thought-out and well-written story that spans generations and covers such topics as love lost, love found, finding oneself and receiving permission to find happiness. I don't apologize for being an old romantic but everything about this film allows you to forget your own life trials and tribulations, as you loose yourself in the story. The story works, and if the plot is unbelievable it none the less is a wonderful trip.
