Polanski popularized it to some extent, and the film benefitted from the cinematography, which was great. This film, while shortened from about three and a half to two hours, conveys the essence of the play. Saw this version when it was released in '71 and I find that I always compare it with other earlier and later versions - given the age of the production this is still my personal favourite

Any student of Shakespeare, Roman Polanski follower, or film buff in general should take time out to view this film.

I did Macbeth nearly 60 years ago as part of my English Lit O level. Anything that Shakespeare did is OK with me. Just what I wanted to use with a student about to do mock GCSE. A sex-repulsed woman who disapproves of her sister's boyfriend sinks into depression and has horrific visions of rape and violence.

Polanski brought great creativity to his interpretation and staging.

Jon Finch is Macbeth, the Scottish war hero whose insane ambitionunleashes a cycle of violence. The rating stems from lots of blood and murder, nudity (non-sexual), and references to rape. But I'm glad to say that this version has stood the pace of time, as it's just as relevant now, as back then. I've given three stars because the DVD quality is rather less brilliant than I expected. A ruthlessly ambitious Scottish lord siezes the throne with the help of his scheming wife and a trio of witches.

I am currently studying Shakespeare's Macbeth and this film brought to life the story quite graphically - quite how I think Shakespeare would have wanted it portrayed on film if he were alive today. Super. If you liked “Breaking Bad,” Macbeth” is the original tale of a good man going bad—though the original goodness “full of the milk of human kindness” is hinted at rather than shown. I am delighted to have it once again in working order. The acting is superb and particularly enamour to Martin Shaw's (The Professionals/Judge Deed) role as General Banquo - really watchable stuff! It was great to watch it again after so many years.

The acting is all first-class right down to the lesser roles and the scenery is fantastic (Wales I think). This has good subtitles and clear diction making it excellent for teaching for GCSE. This version, although now over forty years old, stands up well.
