Season eight saw him leave the show with a dramatic exit - so why the actor decide to depart?Season eight of Suits ended with Robert Zane sacrificing himself to save his beloved legal firm.The formidable lawyer took the fall after Daniel Hardman (David Costabile) attempted to disbar Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) for breaking privilege.However, it was actually Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty) who broke privilege.But it was Robert who made the decision to save the firm from ruin and take the blame after he felt guilty for setting up Samantha Wheeler’s (Katherine Heigl) mugger earlier in the season.This meant Wendell Pierce left the long-running show early in 2019.Speaking about the decision to write him out, showrunner Aaron Korsh admitted that part of it was to do with availability.He told the USA Network: “First and foremost, we did it for a logistical reason.“Part of the problem is when you have amazing actors who are not series regulars on your show, they’re often series regulars - or in high demand - on other show.“And then we were told that he would be unavailable to us next year from March until mid-July or something like that, and that it would not be a situation where sometimes we could fly him up for a day or two.“So I thought there was no choice but to write Robert Zane out.”This is partly due to the fact that Pierce went on to have a large role in Amazon Prime Video’s hit series Jack Ryan.Alongside this, he was preparing to star in Death of a Salesman at the Piccadilly Theatre, which he is currently appearing in.Speaking about the storyline that Korsh used to write the character out, he spoke about how it all fell together.Fans will remember that in the season eight finale, it was revealed that Zane had set up Samantha’s mugger.This had landed him in prison where he was eventually murdered.Korsh added: “Zane has been feeling guilty about it ever since.“It just reignites these things for him, and then he uses it as an opportunity to redeem himself and take the bullet for Harvey.”Fans did manage to see the character in a final few scenes of season nine as he returned as a confident to Samantha Wheeler (Katherine Heigl).This included a scene in the finale where Samantha called Robert from her new office at the law firm to congratulate her.Speaking about playing the role earlier in the year, Pierce told Express.co.uk about how much he enjoyed starring on the show.He said: “It was the chemistry of the writers, and producers, and the actors coming together and creating something.“Everyone, you know, starts out trying to create something that’s going to be impactful - and then it’s been fortunate that we had this response.”Viewers will next be able to see him in Jack Ryan season two, which drops on Amazon Prime this Friday (November 1).
