One of the most beautiful trails in the big cypress ! I went back yesterday and although easy to follow, the trail looked like it has not had any maintenance since I was there the first time. As far as gators, it is obviously the backcountry wilderness and one should stay vigilant about the surroundings, but the likelihood of being attacked by a gator is very low. For a change you can venture just of the trail on the north side while still following the trail, here it is an easier hike with nothing but young cypress trees and beautiful Cardinal Air Plants everywhere you look. It bolted away and watched me from under water in a nearby pond while I ate my lunch.

Can’t wait to go back in the wet season to enjoy the other face of this trail. I went during the dry season, so it wasn’t really a “swamp walk” as I expected. Here is an example of the path.You might be wondering what’s with the photo of ferns. I was looking for a more rugged, adventurous, sloppy hike when I picked this trail, and it gave me what I wanted. The trail is both dry and wet. However, this one isn’t as easy as the previous ones. There’s a photographer here, Clyde Butcher, who goes out into the swamps and does Saturday swamp walks ($50 per person though is steep!) Im definitely coming back.

I decided I would do a mix hike/swamp walk and tackle the infamous Gator Hook Trail out on Loop Road. Centennial Volunteer Ambassador Joshua Kezar at Big Cypress. It is a fantastic experience to walk through such a unique environment, and I would highly recommend it!

I hiked about a mile in and back and this took an hour.Pretty good trail. The elevated ground is actually the original tram that the loggers used to get deep in the cypress forest.However, that feeling of solid ground is quickly dashed when you meet your first deep water experience. The third good place to hike is the Gator Hook Slough Trail.
