enid film review

Whilst training as a teacher after the Great War she sends her stories to publishers, one of whom, Hugh Pollock,takes her on and also marries her. After seeing devastating results of ethnic war in former Yugoslavia soldiers from UNPROFOR peace units find it impossible to return back to their civil lives in the UK. This is a very funny black comedy.

You feel betrayed, robbed of the childhood fondness and unknowing partaken to support the evil Enid Blyton was in real life. I enjoyed this film and thought all the performances were excellent. Silky from the Magic Faraway Tree stories), magical or exciting adventures and moments where I laughed and cried.

Let me first say that I am not by any means a lover of dark comedies. It seems that the reasonable dilemma had been seen unreasonably for lack of such emotions that was felt intact but not accentuated.Our school library used to have a huge stack of Enid Blyton books and I enjoyed them all.

Her first husband Hugh Pollock, who was also her publisher, was played by Matthew Macfadyen. Even the children in the film were superb, lacking all the annoying qualities of so many children in films and television these days. This is a remarkable achievement in television film-making for the BBC. Although Helena Bonham Carter delivers yet another great performance, Enid Blyton remains a very one dimensional character not to say that she is portrayed as cold and downright evil. They of course prefer such loathsome persons as Russell Brand and the unspeakably disgusting (pardon me while I am sick) Jonathan Ross. As an actress generally, she just gets better and better (see my previous reviews of her films of recent years), and soon she may explode and become a kind of super-nova perhaps, scattering the screen with particles of light and stray atoms, building blocks of a future galaxy. The film explores how the orderly, reassuringly clear worlds Enid Blyton created within her stories contrasted with the complexity of her own personal life. The excellent cast has a ball with the wacky material: Reinhold sweats and frets with exquisite eye-rolling panache, Perkins is a screwball treat as she endures one dreadful mishap after another and barely manages to keep hysteria at bay, Jeffrey Jones almost steals the whole show as Harry's eager beaver partner Floyd, Brion James has an uproariously raucous field day as a loutish and disgusting drunken truck driver, plus there are nifty bits by Rhea Perlman as snippy dispatcher Mavis, Michael J. Pollard as a flaky late-night motel manager, Charles Tyner as an ornery old coot, and Henry Jones as a doddery elderly gas station attendant. A real hoot. Sort by: Filter by Rating: 8 /10. It gives one hope that there is still anyone out there capable of making a decent television film in Britain at the present time, other than Stephen Poliakoff of course, when the Philistines are so rampant and are in control of every inch of the high ground, and with culture on the run, harried by unrestrained and in-your-face mediocrity, idiocy, lack of taste, and vacuity, which are the hallmarks of the BBC in this year 2009. A change of government in Britain cannot come quickly enough, so that the BBC can be brought to its senses, its executives who lack any semblance of ability or competence can stop being paid more than hedge fund managers for doing nothing of any worth, and some kind of appreciation of public service broadcasting can be brought back again whereby magnificent films like this one will be given their due prominence on a main channel at peak time viewing. As to why she treats her first husband so badly never becomes really clear, apparently it has to do with the fact that to some extent he was a father figure for her who ultimately had to disappoint her as a self fulfilling prophecy.
