One particularly amusing piece of information is that when Lassally wanted to get Rita's legs to show up in a long shot at 'the Arches' in the evening, he threw white sand down behind her to make them visible by contrast. Watch out for a continuity gaff in the scenes on the pier! Not to take away from the other actors/actresses, but I just wanted to mention how much this role of geoff played by Murray affected me. In occasion of the theatrical premiere of the play it was written that Delaney, who comes from Ireland, knows well what to condemn and what to scoff of. Tony Richardson was one of the key figures in this movement, and "A Taste of Honey" is one of a number of such films directed by him; others include "Look Back in Anger" from 1958 and "The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner" from 1962. 9 out of 11 found this helpful. Despite the downbeat material, the thoughtful direction and compulsive performances turn this into a highly watchable film. Groundbreaking (in 1961) subject matter still has impact today. This offbeat film is funny, tragic, and all the stops in between...and if Rita Tushingham, as the teenaged heroine "Jo", is the movie's heart, its soul is Murray Melvin, whose subtle but searing performance as her friend "Geoff" is one of the greatest on film (it deservedly won him the Cannes Film Festival's "Palme d'Or"). Food was delicious and got rave reviews from every guest. I would have liked to have seen Jo's relationship with the sailor explored more and given more depth, it was so crucial to the story. Was this review helpful? The film is one of the head accomplishments of young and angry British cinema of the 50's and 60's. There are several aspects about this film that I find absolutely clever. She meets a gay textile design student, Geoffrey Ingham (With Jo heavily pregnant, Geoff tracks down Helen and tells her Jo is pregnant. Cause everybody wants to be something to write home about a little more than what you see a diamond in the rough Everybody wants to be somebody somebody could love. Overall, this was a thought provoking, realistic film which was successful as no attempt was made to glamorise the setting or situation. Every Saturday night KHJ channel 9 would air foreign films. But, that aspect is what probably increased my interest. A Taste of Honey remains worth savouring. For in them, she conveys instead the rage and frustration of her terrible circumstances in this gritty social drama of a lonely and unwanted pregnancy in grinding poverty and social isolation. Dora Bryan plays Rita's mother, a feckless, self-absorbed woman who finds it inconvenient having a daughter hanging around when she wants to look for a man for herself. Dora Bryan is magnificent as the "couldn't-care-less" mother who's quest for a good time is at the expense of all others. So when we meet up in the sky so blue will you remember I was good to you? It got under everyone's skin and the taste lingered, not really of honey alas, but more of the bitterness of the vinegar and gall of hopeless loneliness. Teen pregnancy, an openly homosexual companion, a negligent single mother and homelessness are featured- mainstream topics in today's movies, but this was released in 1961, folks (beats me how they got it past the censors).
