Founded as the Department of Economics of Yangon University in 1924, the Institute became an independent university of higher learning in 1964. Founded in 1878, Yangon University is a public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large metropolis of Yangon (population range of over 5,000,000 inhabitants).
